 3-in-1 ROBOT GUN

A Truly Mysterious Vintage Robot Inspired by Astro Magnum

This intriguing vintage 3-in-1 robot gun has puzzled collectors for years. Although only a few images of this figure exist, very little verified information is available about its origins or manufacturer.

What we can confirm is that the chest piece of this 3-in-1 Robot Gun is a direct copy of the classic Astro Magnum mold. The distinctive clear red gun sight also mirrors the design of Astro Magnum, further suggesting a strong connection—or perhaps an unlicensed reproduction.

Because documentation is so scarce, this figure remains one of the more mysterious robot toys circulating among vintage collectors. If anyone has more details, history, or additional photos, your insight could help shed light on this fascinating piece of retro robot toy history.

So, what do we actually know about this elusive figure?
Let’s explore the mystery together!

A vintage catalog from Chung’s International Co. LTD. showcases the “3 IN 1 ROBOT GUN” in both its robot mode and gun mode. The catalog image reveals two distinct color variants displayed side-by-side:

1. Navy Blue Variant – shown on the left, notably without the eye stickers applied.
2. Dark Gray / Black Variant – shown on the right.

An important detail for collectors:
These are two separate physical figures, not the same toy photographed twice and placed together in the catalog layout.

Notice the figure now has 'silver' eye stickers applied.

Interesting to note the catalog has it shown next to another robot gun:
B/O 'F14 Laser Fighter'
F14 Laser Fighter was manufactured by Tai Fong of Taiwan.

New Hands-On Collector Insights & Functional Breakdowns
Thanks to new photos and hands-on details shared by a fellow collector, we now have an incredible look into the actual functionality, structural quirks, and physical traits of the 3-in-1 Robot Gun. Standing slightly shorter than a standard Galactic Man or Astro Magnum figure, this unbranded variant lacks any official company or country stampings, and its unique battery compartment will not accept a standard Astro Magnum battery cover. Mechanically, the figure is wired to produce four distinct electronic sounds: three are selected via the stomach-mounted switch, while sliding the removable gun handle into place allows the trigger to activate a fourth alternate noise. While both clear plastic gun hands appear engineered to light up, wiring them through the thin plastic tubing of the shoulder joints creates a highly fragile bottleneck where internal connections easily fail over time. This cheap plastic construction and precarious shoulder joint design also make holding weapon mode nearly impossible, though the arms do feature small interlocking tabs intended to help clip them together when transformed. Despite its brittle engineering and overall budget quality, these newly uncovered design oddities only add to the fascinating, enigmatic charm of this rare Astro Magnum offshoot.

Who Made 3-in-1 Robot Gun?

The Mystery of Tai Fong’s 1985 TG-118 2-in-1 Robot Pistol Prototype

The Tai Fong Connection: A Pre-Production Clue? (Theory)
While the physical figure lacks any manufacturer stamps, a fascinating clue exists in a 1985 Tai Fong (Taiwan) distributor catalog. The pages feature a prototype illustration labeled TG-118 2-in-1 Robot Pistol that shares a strikingly similar silhouette, showing the robot's cannon arms without the standard barrel cover cover. Because Tai Fong already sold the standard Astro Magnum mold as the TG-117, it is highly possible the unreleased TG-118 design was modified and eventually manufactured as this budget-friendly 3-in-1 Robot Gun.
While this remains an unconfirmed community theory, the fact that our physical sample stands shorter than a standard TG-117, features entirely re-engineered electronics, and uses a completely different battery compartment layout proves that a major manufacturing overhaul took place somewhere behind the scenes.
