Coko Toys Co. LTD, based in Korea, has manufactured a diverse array of toys, including the Coko Bricks 코코산업 collection, dolls, robots, and more! The company commenced brick production around 1984 and continues to this day, focusing on educational blocks designed to assist school students in developing their language and math skills. 

Coko has created interlocking bricks suitable for nursery-aged children, extending to highly intricate sets with over 1000 pieces. Their collections encompass themes such as town life, castle series, and military sets. 

In 1989, Coko formed a partnership with Larami Corp. 
to launch Coko Bricks in the United States. 

Throughout their history, they have consistently 
featured a recognizable elephant even as their logo evolved.

COKO branded pegs on the bricks and plates

The story of Coko Bricks in the United States is closely connected to Larami Corporation, the major American toy company known for importing and marketing toys during the 1980s and 1990s. Coko Bricks were manufactured in South Korea and were brought into the American toy market through Larami. According to a former Larami employee, Myung Song, one of Larami's Korean-American co-owners, was personally acquainted with the owner of Coko Bricks in South Korea. That friendship appears to have been the connection that led Larami to begin importing and distributing Coko building sets in the United States. As a result, Coko's Korean-made construction toys appeared in American catalogs, retail stores, and toy collections, providing an important but little-known link between the Korean toy industry and the American toy market during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

SIDE NOTE

One of the more intriguing discoveries in researching Coko Bricks is a possible connection between the original Korean Coko building-block system and the later Chinese KAI TUO TOYS brand. Coko, distributed in the United States by Larami, produced distinctive castle-building sets, including a 242-piece Castle Building Play Set featuring specialized gray castle walls, arched doors and windows, black architectural elements, green baseplates, red roof pieces, knights, horses, and multiple construction possibilities. Years later, Chinese-made KAI TUO KT-238 “Castle Play Set” appeared with 238 pieces and remarkably similar castle architecture and specialized components.

The set was sold in both cardboard-box and plastic-bucket packaging, including an Australian example imported by The Reject Shop with an original KT-238 instruction sheet. The similarities go far beyond simply being LEGO-compatible building blocks—the distinctive castle designs, specialized parts, colors, and overall building concept strongly suggest a direct relationship. Whether KAI TUO acquired original Coko molds, reproduced the tooling, or obtained the designs through another manufacturing connection remains a mystery. For now, the Coko–KAI TUO connection offers an intriguing new clue in the history of Coko Bricks and the evolution of international compatible building-block toys.
